Hidden within the iPhone’s Phone application lies a host of underutilized capabilities, from obscure dialer commands unlocking information or initiating specific functions to specialized symbols that automate dialing for extensions. We’ll help you explore call settings in iPhone and additional tools that will make your phone calls more comfortable and productive.

1 Always Activate Talk Through Speaker

Tired of being tethered to your iPhone during calls? Unleash the convenience of hands-free communication by setting your device to automatically use speaker mode for calls. Don’t worry, the choice is still yours with a tap of the speaker button during any call. Ready to switch?

Here’s the quick setup for call freedom:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Navigate to Accessibility.
  4. Scroll to find the Call Audio Routing option.
  5. Hit that and then select Speaker to ensure it’s checked.
  6. Now your calls will broadcast through the speaker by default.

And a bonus tip: Prefer your headset? This function lets you route all calls through your preferred earpiece as well. Enjoy seamless conversations the way you like!

2 Record Conversations

To do this, we will need a Call Recorder for the iPhone, since the iPhone does not have a built-in function. But you can record phone calls effortlessly and at any time. You can use a free call recording app for iPhone to record work or personal calls. All recordings created through Call Recorder for iPhone have good resolution and can be listened to at any time. There’s even a feature to record calls if you don’t pick up the phone.

3 Putting a Phone Call on Hold

If you’re looking to put a call on hold but can’t find the option, fret not! The feature is subtly tucked away. All you need to do is firmly press and hold the mute button during your call. After a moment, it will switch to display a hold icon, signified by a pause symbol within a circle. This nifty trick applies whether your call is muted at the onset or not. To resume the conversation, simply tap the pause symbol again and continue where you left off.

And here’s a handy tip: this feature isn’t exclusive to regular calls. FaceTime audio calls also benefit from this, sharing a similar interface to access the hold function.

4 How to Enable Auto-Answer Calls on Your iPhone

Do you find yourself too engrossed in your work that you often miss important calls? If you’re expecting a call and don’t want to lose focus from your task at hand, your iPhone’s auto-answer feature could be a lifesaver. Here’s a step-by-step guide to set it up, with the flexibility to pick up or decline calls as you normally would.

First Things First: Enable Auto-Answer

  1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility.
  2. Scroll until you reach Call Audio Routing and tap it.
  3. Locate Auto-Answer Calls towards the bottom and toggle it to the ‘on’ position, making it green.

Customize the Ring Duration

  • Right beneath the Auto-Answer toggle, set the duration for the ring time before your iPhone automatically answers the call. This duration is represented in seconds. Remember, you can still reject any incoming call using the classic red button during the call alert.

5 Specify the Audio Routing Preference

  1. Return to Settings > General > Accessibility > Call Audio Routing
  2. Here, you can choose if you prefer the call to be answered through your iPhone’s speaker, Bluetooth headphones, or set it to determine the best option automatically.

6 Change the Response Message

With just a tap, you have the convenience of selecting from three ready-made text replies for times when you can’t engage in a conversation. The default options are succinct and to the point:

  1. “Sorry, I can’t talk right now.”
  2. “I’m on my way.”
  3. “Can I call you later?”

However, if these don’t quite fit your style or needs, you’re in luck because customization is at your fingertips. Simply access your Settings, go to ‘Phone’, and look for ‘Respond with Text’. Here, you can tweak the available responses. Tap on any of the pre-set messages, erase it, and key in your own tailored text—it’s as straightforward as that. Now, you can convey your message exactly how you want to.

7 Make Siri Say the Caller’s Name

If you’re visually impaired or simply prefer not to remove your iPhone from your pocket while enjoying music on your AirPods, Siri can announce incoming calls, provided the caller is listed in your Contacts. To enable this feature, go to Settings > Phone > Announce Calls. Here, you have several options:

  • Always: Siri will announce calls regardless of your current activity.
  • Headphones & Car: Call announcements will occur only when you’re connected to headphones or a car Bluetooth system.
  • Headphones Only: You’ll only hear call announcements when wearing headphones.
  • Never: This turns off call announcements completely.

Choose the setting that best fits your lifestyle and enjoy a more convenient way to identify who’s on the line without ever looking at your screen.

Conclusion

You can simply make calls via iPhone or streamline this process. The choice is yours. The listed functions are not always necessary, but you never know when your knowledge will come in handy.
